Tension is an American speed , power and thrash metal band from Baltimore , Maryland that was founded in 1978 under the name Deuce , split up in 1988 and reunited in 2011.

history

In 1978, 15-year-old singer and guitarist Tom Gattis moved from Wyoming to Maryland to form a band. Gattis placed an advertisement in the local newspaper, on which the 16-year-old high school buddy and guitarist Marty Friedman reported, who would later make a career with bands like Cacophony and Megadeth as well as as a soloist. Shortly thereafter, bassist Steve Leter and drummer Chris Tinto joined the band, so that towards the end of the year the band Deuce was born. At the beginning of 1979 Leter and Tinto left the band again. Billy Giddings joined the band as the new drummer, while Mike Davis occupied the bass. Small local appearances followed in the middle of the year. Towards the end of the year Gattis gave up the post of singer, so singer Eddie Day joined the band. This line-up lasted until 1980 when Day left the band and Gattis took over the vocals again. In the same year Mike Davis was replaced by bassist Chris Hall. Guitarist Friedman left the band to move to Hawaii later that year . Friedman was replaced by Timmy Meadows, the younger brother of Angel guitarist Punky Meadows. Then the band went to the studio to record the single I'm Saved / Bad Boys . This recording was used several times by local radio, which had its part in the fact that the band attracted up to 500 people live. One night in 1981, all of the band's equipment burned in the barn where they usually performed. With the insurance money, the group bought new instruments. From then on they rehearsed in Giddings' basement. In late 1982 bassist Hall left the band and was replaced by a friend of Timmy Meadows', Michael Francis. The band gained further attention, as a result of which they could play as opening act for bands such as Ratt , Queensrÿche , Grim Reaper and Talas in 1983 . This in turn brought it into the focus of various labels. The Torrid Records label , which also released the first Exodus album Bonded by Blood , was interested in the band. Shortly before signing the contract in 1985, Michael Francis got out and was replaced by bassist Timmy O'Connor. In October 1985, the band flew into the Capitol Records studio in Los Angeles to record their debut album. During the recording, the band was notified that there was already a band of the same name, so they renamed themselves Tension. A year later, the debut album Breaking Point was released in the US (the European market, for example, the import result was observed). The release followed appearances as opening act for Metal Church , Megadeth and Exciter . In 1987 Tension went back to the studio to record the EP Epitome , which included three songs. In contrast to their debut album, the band was happy with the result, but it was never released by Torrid Records. In 1988 founding member Tom Gattis left the band because he moved to New Mexico , whereupon the band split up. In March 2011, Tension got together again.

style

The band plays a mixture of power, speed and thrash metal in the sense of bands like Overkill , Metal Church and Agent Steel .
