Bonded by Blood ( Engl. For Connected by blood ) is the debut album of American thrash metal band Exodus . It was released on April 25, 1985 via Torrid Records and is considered one of the most influential albums in the genre. In 2008, the band recorded the album again in their current line-up and released the recordings under the title Let There Be Blood .

Emergence

The nine songs on the album were written years before the album was recorded. Guitarist Kirk Hammett , who switched to Metallica in 1983, contributed ideas to some of the songs . The recordings took place within three weeks at the Prairie Sun Studios. According to drummer Tom Hunting and guitarist Gary Holt, staying in the studio was a big party to which the band invited friends and at which a large part of the furniture and equipment was destroyed.

“We recorded most of the songs live with the entire band; we were not interested in any technical subtleties. "

- Gary Holt

The album was produced by Mark Whitaker. Although the album was recorded back in July 1984, it took nine months before Bonded by Blood was released. The reason for this were problems with the record company and with the cover artwork . Originally the album should be called A Lesson in Violence (English for "A lesson in violence"). However, the title was discarded because no suitable cover artwork was found.

The Siamese twins appearing on the cover artwork were, according to Gary Holt, only a stopgap solution. The band wanted a picture that only consists of body parts as artwork. However, this was rejected by the record company. Combat Records' re-release includes a different album artwork that only shows the band logo and the name of the album in front of a red and black photo of the audience at a concert. Century Media used the original artwork for their republication.

Already months before it was released, pre-copies of the album were circulating in the tape trading scene around the world. According to Gary Holt, guitarist Rick Hunolt had lost a cassette with the album at a concert.

meaning

In the book "Best of Rock & Metal" by the German rock-hard magazine, which lists the 500 strongest metal and hard-rock albums of all time, according to the rock-hard editorial team, Bonded by Blood was ranked 56th Thomas Kupfer described the work as an “absolute milestone in extreme music” and praised the “legendary guitar work”. However, he also criticized the "bloodthirsty and senseless lyrics". In 2005 the readers of the German Metal Hammer voted their 100 best metal albums of all time. Bonded by Blood took 59th place. Marc Halupczok described the album as “the forefather of all Thrash records, although similar bands like Metallica or Slayer have already released several albums”.

Bonded by Blood is also considered an influential work among musicians . Metallica singer James Hetfield described the album as his early 1980s soundtrack and "a sound you couldn't help but ravage your friends' house". For machine-head singer Robb Flynn , Bonded by Blood is the album he loved most.

"The songs are awesome, and Paul Baloff was a completely insane front man."

- Robb Flynn

The Californian thrash metal band Bonded by Blood named themselves after their Exodus debut.

useful information

Let There Be Blood

After the album Bonded by Blood was not available in the USA for a long time, the band tried to regain the rights to the songs. When this was successful, the album was re-recorded in 2008 with the current line-up. Only guitarist Gary Holt and drummer Tom Hunting can be heard on both albums. New to Let There Be Blood are singer Rob Dukes , guitarist Lee Altus and bassist Jack Gibson. Was produced Let There Be Blood by Gary Holt, was released the album through Zaentz Records. In addition to the nine songs of the original version, the song Hell's Breath was recorded.

Let There Be Blood was recorded differently. Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard gave the album the highest rating because he “can't remember any other new recording that so skillfully captured the old school spirit and at the same time provided it with additional pressure”. Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer, on the other hand, doubted the necessity of this release and asked whether Exodus needed a little change. He awarded four out of seven points.
