Blood In, Blood Out -

Blood In, Blood Out is the tenth studio album by the US thrash metal band Exodus . It was released on October 14, 2014 via Nuclear Blast and marked the return of singer Steve Souza .

Emergence

The two guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus have been working on new songs since 2012 . In particular, Holt was interrupted again and again, because at the same time he was helping out with the band Slayer for the sick and later deceased Jeff Hanneman . In October 2013, Gary Holt took a six-month break to push the songwriting for the new Exodus album. In total, Gary Holt wrote nine songs and Lee Altus two.

The recording took place at the Goats' R Us Ranch & Studios in Briones. Right at the beginning of the recording there was a dispute between singer Rob Dukes and the other band members about the sound of the album. According to guitarist Gary Holt, Dukes had a different opinion than the other musicians. Eventually Rob Dukes had to leave the band. By the time Duke was kicked out, he had already recorded the vocals for all but one song. Guitarist Lee Altus described Dukes' singing in an interview as if Dukes had read from a sheet of lyrics. Dukes' predecessor Steve Souza was brought back as the successor . According to Gary Holt, Souza was not the first choice. After Holt sent Souza a few new songs and the corresponding lyrics, Souza was in the rehearsal room with the band a few hours later. As everyone involved was satisfied with the result, Souza's return was decided.

On the album, the band worked with some guest musicians. The most prominent guest musician is the Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett , who himself played with Exodus until 1982. Hammett was previously only heard on the Exodus demo "Whipping Queen" and played a guitar solo on the song "Salt the Wound" on Blood In, Blood Out . Testament singer Chuck Billy can be heard on the song "BTK". Dan the Automator contributed the intro to the song "Black 13". Finally, Anthony "Rat" Martin from the band The Varukers sang on the song "Protect Not Dissect", a cover version of a Varukers song. Another cover version was recorded with "Angel of Death" by the band Angel Witch , in which Tom Hunting took over most of the vocal recordings. This bonus track is only available digitally. The album cover was designed by Pär Olofsson.

background

According to Gary Holt, the album title is not an allusion to the singer change from Rob Dukes to Steve Souza. Rather, it is a term from gang language .

“If you join a gang, the members beat you up badly, if you leave later, the same thing happens to you. Entry and exit are paid for with blood . That kind of fits Exodus. We see ourselves as a gang and have shed a lot of blood over the years. "

- Gary Holt

The theme song "Blood In Blood Out" is a reference to the late first Exodus singer Paul Baloff. The song "BTK" is about the serial killer Dennis Rader . Rader, who described himself as a BTK killer , killed at least ten people between 1974 and 1991. The abbreviation BTK stands for “Bind, Torture, Kill” (“tie up, torture, kill”), the way in which the BTK killer treated his victims. It was not until 2005 that Rader was arrested and sentenced to ten times life imprisonment.

reception

Reviews

Colin Brinker from the online magazine Metal.de rated Blood In, Blood Out with the highest grade, because "all the strengths of the band can be found on the album and have been partially increased". The songwriting would be “less complex and epic compared to the previous albums”, but “but more crisp to the point” and “sounds more focused”. Thomas Kupfer from the German magazine Rock Hard wrote in his review that Souza's vocals “gave the band a lot more character” and emphasized the “organic sound”. Since Exodus “belongs to the spearhead of the extreme metal bands in 2014 too ”, Kupfer awarded nine out of ten points.

Chart placements

Blood In Blood Out sold approximately 8,800 copies in the US in the first week after its release . The band thus reached number 38 in the US album charts , which is also the highest chart position in the band's home country to date. In Germany the album reached number 29, in Switzerland number 30, in Austria number 38 and in the United Kingdom number 71.
