Pleasures of the Flesh is the second studio album by the US thrash metal band Exodus . It was released on Combat Records in 1987 . It is the first album with singer Steve Souza and contains the single "Deranged".

Emergence

Pleasures of the Flesh became after the departure of Paul Baloff, who had to leave the band due to personal and musical differences as well as alcohol consumption. Some demos for the album had already been recorded with Baloff . He is also mentioned as a co-author on the songs "Seeds of Hate", "Pleasures of the Flesh" and "Brain Dead". The remaining pieces were written by Gary Holt with Steve Souza , who came from Testament . With the 40 seconds long 30 Seconds a piece was recorded with a classical guitar. The album was recorded in the Alpha & Omega Recordings studio in San Francisco and produced by Marc Senesac and the band. The initially planned producer Mark Whitaker was fired, which led to a delay in the album release. Whitaker had still produced the drum tracks for the album.

The album came with an original comic-style cover showing the band as cannibals preparing for their meal. There was also a picture disc of this. A later recording shows the band members at a bar.

reception

Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic called Pleasures of the Flesh "almost an evolutionary step backwards". Apart from the catchy title track, the record delivers nothing. He gave two out of five stars. Rock Hard magazine included the album in its 2009 list of 250 Thrash Metal Albums to Know. Pleasures of the Flesh reached number 82 in the US album charts.

Steve Souza named Pleasures of the Flesh 2013 as his favorite Exodus album alongside Fabulous Disaster .
