Shovel Headed Kill Machine is the seventh studio album by the US thrash metal band Exodus . It was released on October 4, 2005 by Nuclear Blast and is the first album with singer Rob Dukes , guitarist Lee Altus and the first and only album with drummer Paul Bostaph .

Emergence

During the making of Shovel Headed Kill Machine there were a few line-up changes within the band. Even before the work began, Steve Souza was kicked out of the band by Gary Holt after an argument. Later, Rick Hunolt was because of his drug problems by Lee Altus replaced, and Tom Hunting was Paul Bostaph (previously among others, Slayer and Testament ) to the band. For Bostaph it was to remain the only album with Exodus.

Holt was not impressed by this. Since he had also written all the music and half of the lyrics for the previous album, he was able to finish the songwriting as usual. Between January and June 2005 he wrote almost all of the riffs.

Texts

In the song Deathamphetamine (a pun on death ., Eng death , and Methamphetamine ) processed Holt its avowed over Methamphetaminsucht:

“Well" Deathamphetamine "is the most personal thing I have ever written because it describes what I went through when I was addicted to Methamphetamine. It was also written when Rick was still in the band as a last ditch attempt for him to read between the lines but it didn't have that effect. "

Deathamphetamine is the most personal thing I've ever written. It describes what I went through when I was addicted to methamphetamine. It was also written while Rick was still in the band, as a last attempt to give him a hint, but that didn't work. "

- Gary Holt

Other songs, however, have no personal reference.

"Then again you've got songs where I talk about killing somebody and I've yet to kill anybody, so I don't know how personal that is?"

“On the other hand, there are songs where I talk about killing someone and I've never done that; so I don't know how personal that is. "

- Gary Holt

reception

There were good reviews from the trade press, although not quite as good as the predecessor.

"Shovel Headed Kill Machine" is not quite as strong as the comeback album [...] However, after listening to it several times, "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" is close to the 2004 work [...]. "

- Patrick Schmidt.

Cover version

useful information

  • The song "Purge the World" was originally called "COTC (Crime of the Century)" and was actually intended for the previous album Tempo of the Damned . However, since the band settled in the text of this song with their previous record company Century Media , Exodus and Nuclear Blast were not allowed to release the song. The song was then rearranged, renamed "Purge the World" and used as a bonus track for Shovel Headed Kill Machine . The song is missing from the track list on the back of the German digipak edition, but is included on the CD. The title is already listed in the track list of the South Korean CD pressing and the German LP pressing from 2005.
