Angel is an American glam and hard rock - band from Washington, DC

history

1975-1981

The band formed in 1975 with the following line-up: Punky Meadows (guitar), Mickie Jones (bass), Frank DiMino (vocals), Gregg Giuffria (keyboard) and Barry Brandt (drums). Her first musical "steps" were made under the name Sweet Mama from Heaven . After a short time they renamed themselves Angel, a tribute to the song of the same name by Jimi Hendrix . They played local club shows until they Gene Simmons of Kiss discovered and wanted to take her in his management contract. David Joseph was already the manager of the band and was just preparing the recordings for the debut album . The band members moved to Los Angeles and recorded the songs with producers Derek Lawrence and Big Jim Sullivan . Your manager paid for the recordings out of pocket. On the recommendation of Simmons, the recordings came to Casablanca Records , who signed the band and released the self-titled debut album. The album was mainly based on Kiss, but was more progressive .

The band appeared exclusively in white, which should be a contrast to Kiss. In addition, the band members had an androgynous image, which was a trademark for glam rock.

After touring, the band released another album called Helluva Band (1976) and was voted best newcomer by the music magazine Circus . They left Heart and Boston behind. The third album was finally recorded with Eddie Kramer and was released in 1977 under the title On Earth as It Is in Heaven . With this album, the band developed from a typical glam rock band to a hard rock band. After another tour, Mickey Jones got out and had to be replaced by Felix Robinson. White Hot from 1978 showed the band as a grown music group that had now completely said goodbye to glam. The single Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore (a cover version of the Rascals ) reached # 44 on the US Billboard charts. In 1978 Angel was able to land at least one radio hit in Germany. Her winter song made it to 3rd place in the radio hit parade WDR2 - Schlagerrallye in January of that year.

Sinful from 1979 was then a pure pop album, but it could not build on the success of its predecessor. In 1980, two Angel songs appeared on the soundtrack to the film Jeanie's Clique , followed by the live album Live Without a Net . Then the band broke up.

After the dissolution

Frank DiMino sang the song Seduce Me Tonight for the Flashdance soundtrack in 1983 and devoted himself to other projects. The rest of the band also tried their luck in other bands, so Felix Robinson joined White Lion . Gregg Giuffria formed his own band, Giuffria , which later renamed the House of Lords under the direction of Gene Simmons . In 1987 Angel undertook a reunion attempt without Giuffria, but it did not get beyond the demo stage. All band members then returned to bourgeois life.

In September 2009 bassist Mickie Jones died of cancer.

Reunion

In 1998 Angel re-founded. Frank DiMino and Barry Brandt are still left over from the original line-up. Randy Gregg (bass), Steve Blaze (guitar) and Michael T. Ross (keyboards) completed the line-up. In the Beginning , the post-reunion album, also featured guest contributions from Punky Meadows and Felix Robinson. The band then toured and played at some festivals such as Bang Your Head and Sweden Rock .
