Tenthredo ferruginea is a plant wasp from the family of sawfly (Tenthredinidae).
features
The species reaches a body length of 10–13 mm. The black thorax has a white and yellow longitudinal band on each side. The otherwise black antennae show a broad white band near the tip of the antennae . The abdomen is usually red, but can also be red-yellow or dark in color. The transparent wings have a uniformly brown colored pterostigma , at the basal end of which mostly cream-colored wing veins run. The head is black on top with a bronze sheen. The front is yellow-white. A white-yellow narrow rim runs along the inside of the greenish shimmering eyes. The femora are predominantly dark in color, while the tibia and tarsi are yellow-brown in color.
The anal caterpillars are blue-green on the upper side and yellow on the sides. Her head is yellow-brown.
distribution
The species occurs in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. The species is apparently not represented on the Iberian Peninsula .
Way of life
The typical habitat of Tenthredo ferruginea is formed by hedges and the edges of spruce trees . The plant wasps can be seen from May to June. The nocturnal larvae feed on the leaves of bracken ( Pteridium aquilinum ), true meadowsweet ( Filipendula ulmaria ), black alder ( Alnus glutinosa ), willow ( Salix ) and prunus .
Natural enemies
The larvae are u. a. of the parasitic wasps TYPES Cosmoconus Elongator and Mesoleptidea prosoleuca parasitized.
