history

The place was founded in 1558 when the colonial rulers merged the warring neighboring villages of Otlazpan and Tepexic . In the period that followed, several place names such as San Francisco Tepexic , San Francisco del Río or Tepexic del Río circulated . In 1861, during the crisis of the presidency of Benito Juárez, the politician Melchor Ocampo was shot here, after which the city received his name.

Attractions

The main attraction of the city is the former Franciscan monastery church, stabilized by side buttresses and only provided with a small bell attachment. With the exception of the two portals , the monastery church, built from rubble stones , is dedicated to the founder of the order ; it has only one nave and a raised apse . The two-storey cloister (claustro) with a central well basin testifies to the prosperity of the monastery, which was dissolved in the 19th century.
