Teratocoris saundersi is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 4.3 to 6.4 millimeters long. The species of the genus Teratocoris have a transverse pit between the compound eyes . The identification of species within this genus is difficult, especially in the case of females. In Teratocoris saundersi , the first part of the antennae is usually predominantly green and densely covered with coarse, fairly long hairs. The sides of the pronotum are almost straight. The species is very similar to Teratocoris viridis and Teratocoris caricis . The adults mostly have regressed (brachyptere) wings. But more often than with other species of the genus Teratocoris , individuals of both sexes with fully developed (macropter) wings occur.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is widespread in the Holarctic and occurs mainly in northern Europe and only rarely penetrates Central Europe. To the east, they spread across the Baltic States and Russia to Siberia and northern China. In Germany it is only found sporadically near the coast, but locally it is not uncommon. Wetlands that are more or less strongly influenced by salt are populated. They are rarely found in moderately moist or dry habitats, such as ruderal meadows with reed vegetation near the coast or on coastal dunes with vegetation of common beach grass ( Phragmites australis ).
Way of life
Teratocoris saundersi lives mainly on reeds ( Phragmites australis ), but also on other sweet grasses (Poaceae), sour grass plants (Cyperaceae) and rush plants (Juncaceae). They feed on zoophytophagus. The development cycle is similar to that of the other Teratocoris species in their range.
