Terence Boston, Baron Boston of Faversham
Terence George Boston, Baron Boston of Faversham QC (born March 21, 1930 - July 23, 2011 ) was a British politician ( Labor ).
life and career
Boston was born to George Thomas Boston and Kate Bellati. He attended Woolwich Polytechnic School in Woolwich , Kent . He served in the Royal Air Force and was promoted to first lieutenant in the Air Force ( Flight Lieutenant ) in 1950 . He studied law at King's College of the University of London in London . In 1954 he received a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from there. In 1960 he was admitted to the Inner Temple Bar Association as a Barrister-at-Law . In 1973 he was admitted to the bar at Gray's Inn. In 1981 he became crown attorney .
From 1957 to 1964, Boston worked for the BBC . From 1957 to 1960 he was deputy editor of BBC News in the field of news agencies ( Sub-editor of External Services ), and from 1960 to 1964 he was broadcasting director in the department of contemporary affairs and politics ( Senior BBC producer of current affairs ). From 1980 to 1990 he was chairman of TVS Entertainment plc .
Boston initially unsuccessfully ran for the Labor Party in the 1955 and 1959 elections in the Wokingham constituency . In May 1964, he was for the Labor Party in the constituency Faversham into the House of Commons voted. He was re-elected in October 1964 and 1966. In the 1970 general election, he lost his seat in the House of Commons to Roger Moate , the Conservative Party candidate .
Between 1964 and 1969, Boston served as Parliamentary Secretary of State (PPS). First from 1964 to 1966 under Charles Pannell , Minister for Public Works and Labor, later under Richard Marsh from 1966 to 1968 in the Department of Energy and from 1968 to 1969 in the Department of Transport. From 1969 to 1970 he was deputy executive director ( Assistant Government Whip ) of the ruling party . Between 1976 and 1978 he was a British delegate to the UN General Assembly .
Boston also held various party offices. From 1949 to 1951 he was a member of the National Committee Young Socialists (at the time: Labor League of Youth ). In 1950 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Socialist Youth .
Boston had been married to Margaret Joyce Head, daughter of Rowley Henry Jack Head, since 1962.
Membership in the House of Lords
Boston was promoted to Life Peer on July 1, 1976 . He was named Baron Boston of Faversham, of Faversham in the County of Kent . In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER .
He was Minister of State in the Home Office in 1979 . From 1979 to 1984 he was opposition spokesman in the House of Lords for Home Office Affairs , from 1984 to 1986 for defense. He was chairman and speaker on several committees of the House of Lords. From 1992 to 1994 he was First Deputy Chairman of the Committees ( Principal Deputy Chairman of Committees ), from 1994 to 1997, and again from 1997 to 2000 Chairman of Committees ( Chairman of Committees ). From 1991 to 2008 he was Deputy Speaker . From 2001 to 2008 he was again Deputy Chairman of Committees . Boston was chairman of the following committees: From 1992 to 1994 the Committee on the Affairs of the European Communities ( European Communities ) from 1994 to 1997, again from 1997 to 2000 for the area allocation ( House of Lords' offices ). From 2003 to 2006 he was a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on the Merits of Statutory Instruments .
His political interests included Boston constitutional issues, overseas affairs, and legislative reforms . Boston named Australia as a country of particular interest .
