The Metro Station Ternes is an underground station of Line 2 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located on the border of the Quartier du Faubourg du Roule in the 8th arrondissement with the Quartier des Ternes in the 17th arrondissement of Paris . It is located under the Place des Ternes, a semicircular square in the course of the Avenue de Wagram, and lengthways under the Boulevard de Courcelles.

Surname

It is named after the Place des Ternes and the Avenue des Ternes that begins there. The word "Ternes" comes from the Latin "villa externa", which referred to an estate belonging to the Paris bishop outside the urban area. Before it was incorporated into Paris in 1860, the area first belonged to Saint-Denis and later to Neuilly .

History and description

Access designed by Hector Guimard on the central island of Place de Ternes

The station was put into operation on October 7, 1902, when the first extension of line 2 (until 1907: line 2 north) from Étoile (since 1970: Charles de Gaulle - Étoile ) to Anvers was opened. The station was renovated in 2007 and 2008.

The 75 m long station has side platforms on two main tracks and an elliptical vaulted ceiling that was laid out in Belgian construction . The white tiled walls follow the curvature of the ellipse. Since the route from Boulevard de Courcelles turns under the southern Avenue de Wagram, the station is on a slight curve. The only access is on the center island of the square, it was designed by Hector Guimard . Another exit with an escalator is at the western end of Boulevard de Courcelles.

vehicles

Initially, there were trains on line 2 north, which were made up of two-axle vehicles with wooden superstructures. From 1914 to 1981 line 2 was used by Sprague-Thomson trains. Since it was not to be converted to vehicles with rubber tires in the medium term, the MF 67 series was launched in 1979 , completely replacing its predecessor within two years. Series MF 01 series vehicles have been in use since 2008 , and mixed traffic with the MF 67 trains prevailed until 2011.
