The Terrible class was the heaviest class of ships of the line in the French Navy .

The two units Terrible and Majestueux were put into service from 1780. With three decks and a nominal 110 cannons, they were among the largest warships of their time. The Victory , which still exists today, gives an impression of these ships .

history

The looming war with England led to a French naval building program. The largest units was the Terrible class. Francois Guillaume Clairin Deslauriers ( Rochefort ), Leon Michel Guignance ( Brest ) and Joseph Marie Blaise Coulomb ( Toulon ) took on the planning based on a common specification .

The successor class Océan was laid down in 1787 .
