Tessera or Tessèra is a small island in the Venice lagoon , which is north of Murano . The island has an area of 6,296 m² and is located on the Tessera Canal.

history

The island of Tessera, formerly known as Batteria Tessera, was part of the defense system of the Republic of Venice , like many of the Venetian islands . This system included eight related island fortresses, namely Fisolo , Campana , Ex Poveglia and Trezze in the south of the lagoon, in the middle and in the north Campalto , Tessera, Carbonera and Buel del Lovo . In 1796, all fortresses except Trezze were in place, but still mostly made of wood.

In connection with the Repubblica di San Marco in which Venice made itself briefly independent against Austrian rule, the fortifications were strengthened. In 1866 the island became Italian. A military radio station was later established.

In the second half of the 20th century the island became private property and houses were built.

In 2000 fragments of a stone meteorite of the type H4 were found on Tessera . The ten pieces had a total weight of 51.3 grams.
