The company, based in Schattdorf , Switzerland, is one of the largest organizations for collecting, sorting and recycling used textiles in Europe .

history

Texaid was founded in 1978 as a merger of six Swiss aid organizations. These are the Swiss Red Cross, Winter Aid Switzerland, Solidar Suisse (formerly the Swiss Workers 'Aid), Caritas Switzerland, Kolping Switzerland and the Swiss Protestant Churches' relief organization (HEKS). To carry out the collection, sorting and marketing of worn textiles, the “Texaid Textilverwertungs-Aktiengesellschaft” was created together with the Böschen entrepreneurial family from Darmstadt .

In 2005, Texaid Bulgaria Ltd. a branch was established in Kostinbrod , Bulgaria . This was followed in 2008 by Texaid Hungaria based in Bélapátfalva .

Texaid Deutschland GmbH was founded in 2009 and Texaid Collection GmbH in 2012, and Resales GmbH, based in Apolda, Thuringia, was taken over in September 2013.

The sorting plant in the free trade zone of Tangier has belonged to Texaid since the takeover of Resales GmbH in 2013. Around 150 employees sort over 8,000 tons of used textiles every year.

On December 2, 2016, “PACKMEE - the clothing donation in a box” started on the German market. The German Red Cross is a partner and receives 50 percent of the income minus postage and logistics costs. Further partners are the logistics companies DHL and Hermes as well as the textile company Esprit . With the system, clothing, shoes and household textiles can be donated by post free of charge.

In 2016, the market entry in Austria with the subsidiary TEXAID Austria GmbH took place through the takeover of AustriaTex Textile SEVH GmbH.

The classic way of collecting old clothes from the streets will be discontinued in most regions of Switzerland: Garment bags can now be deposited directly in their own mailboxes for a certain period. Thanks to the synergies with Swiss Post , there are no empty trips, as the collection of old clothes is combined with the delivery of the post.

Criticism of the company

In 2019, several Swiss newspapers reported on the opaque structures of the company and the luxurious lifestyle of the managing director Martin Böschen. A particular problem here is the fact that non-profit collections have resulted in millions in fortunes for the Böschen family and the commercial nature of the collections is not obvious to many donors.
