Théodore deck
(Joseph-) Théodore Deck , (born January 2, 1823 in Guebwiller , † May 15, 1891 in Paris ), was a ceramist of historicism and art nouveau .
Life
Deck studied physics and chemistry and used the results of his studies initially on silk dyeing and later on the manufacture of faience ovens . After expanding his knowledge on trips to Germany , Austria and Hungary , he founded an oven factory in Paris in 1856 and began experiments in ceramics from 1859, which were perfected so quickly that as early as 1861 he produced the so-called Oiron faience, which was difficult in its technique ( also Henri deux vessels ) could reproduce.
He later invented a new type of faience which, in imitation of ancient Chinese and Persian faiences, gives an even richer metallic reflection. Since he employed a number of painters (including Jean Louis Hamon and Albert Anker ) as a collaborator , his products were also of high artistic value. Because of his achievements at the World Exhibition of 1878 in Paris, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor . In 1887 he became head of the porcelain manufactory in Sèvres (" Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres ").
The Musée du Florival in Théodore Deck's native Guebwiller has the most important collection of his works.
Théodore Deck is buried on the Cimetière Montparnasse . A street in Paris, the Rue Théodore Deck ( in the 15th arrondissement ), was named after him .
