Wilhelmine Karoline of Denmark (born July 10, 1747 in Copenhagen , † January 14, 1820 in Kassel ) was a princess of Denmark and by marriage Electress of Hesse .

Life

Wilhelmine Karoline was a daughter of King Frederick V of Denmark and Norway (1723–1766) and his first wife Louise (1724–1751), daughter of King George II of Great Britain .

On September 1, 1764, the wedding took place with her cousin, the Hereditary Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and Count of Hanau (from 1785 Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel and from 1803 Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse ). Wilhelm was u. a. one of the richest princes of his time due to the extensive soldier trade.

The electoral couple spent the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia (1806 to 1813) separately in exile. While Wilhelm with his mistress u. a. stayed in Schleswig and Prague , Wilhelmine Karoline lived with her younger daughter Karoline Amalie in the Gotha Winter Palace .

The Electress's mausoleum is located in the Kassel Luther Cemetery.
