The Abandoned (Original title: Los Abandonados ) is a Spanish / British / Bulgarian horror film from 2006 by director Nacho Cerdà . The film is about an American film producer who returns to her home country Russia to find out about her mysterious origins.

action

The American film producer Marie Jones, who was adopted as a baby in Russia by a British couple almost 41 years ago , travels to the country of her birth to gather information about her birth parents, whom she never met. The divorced woman, who is now also the mother of a daughter, unexpectedly learns from the local notary, Misharin, that she has inherited a remote house from her mother Olga, who died under mysterious circumstances. Without further ado she decides to visit the place of her early childhood. The journey turns out to be extremely difficult, however, as none of the superstitious residents are willing to lead you to the eerie and cursed property. The taciturn Anatoly proves to be a savior and drives her in an old truck to the run-down country house in the middle of a river; surrounded by forests in the Russian nowhere.

When they arrive in the evening, their local guide disappears without a trace, and Marie is forced to rummage through the old walls alone. In the house she is haunted by the first supernatural appearances before she loses consciousness. When she wakes up again, she meets Nikolai, a soldier who pretends to be her twin brother and is also looking for his past. Marie distrusts her brother in this eerie place. After a while, they encounter wandering ghosts that resemble them like doubles , but are terribly distorted. At first, the two of them cannot explain these strange occurrences to each other, as their perceptions sometimes merge with reality and the levels of space and time are constantly shifting.

However, Nikolai soon reveals the secret and realizes that they probably can't escape this damn place. The father resurrected from the dead, the notary, longs for his family and, on the eve of their birthday, guided the two siblings still alive to the place where they should have died with their mother over 40 years ago. Thanks to their courageous mother, who once seriously injured stood up to the mad father and killed him, they were able to survive at the time. With the violent death of the siblings, their fates are now to come true, so that the father can gather his beloved family instead of the vicarious doppelgangers.

After midnight, on her birthday, however, events roll over. While Nikolai submits to his destiny and dies extremely brutally, Marie rebels against her predetermined end, but fails and drowns. At the end of the film you can hear the melancholy voice of Emily, Marie Jones' daughter, who tells the viewer that she basically knew when her mother left that she would not return. She also explains that during this long period she never felt the desire to investigate her mother or her unknown grandparents, she would much rather be abandoned.
