The Appleseed Cast is an indie rock band , founded in 1997 in Southern California , strongly influenced by the 1990s emo sound - whose work can also be assigned to post rock .

history

The Appleseed Cast was founded in 1997 with Christopher Crisci ( vocals , guitar ), Aaron Pillar (guitar, vocals), Jason Wickersheim ( electric bass ) and Louie Ruiz ( drums ) under the name December's Tragic Drive . This name is based on a line of text from the song Seven by Sunny Day Real Estate .

In 1998 they called themselves The Appleseed Cast and were signed to the Deep Elm Records label . Now their debut work The End Of The Ring Wars was released , which was a huge underground success. In 1999 they moved to Kansas , but Louie Ruiz did not want to come with them, which is why he was replaced by Josh Baruth.

Even before the second album Mare Vitalis was released in 2000 , bassist Jason Wickersheim was kicked out of the band due to disputes with the rest of the members. Marc Young was signed as a replacement. In 2001, Low Level Owl Volume One and Low Level Owl Volume Two were published two months apart. The pieces contained on the 2002 album Lost Songs were already written between End Of The Ring Wars and Mare Vitalis , but were initially not recorded due to the upheavals within the band. The contract with Deep Elm was fulfilled with Lost Songs . In 2003 they signed with the new band member Jordan Geiger ( keyboard ) at New York's Tiger Style Records and released Two Conversations .

Shortly after the Two Conversations publication, tensions arose between the band members, as a result of which the previous drummer Josh Baruth quit his service in 2004 to take up a degree. While the Tigerstyle label was dissolved for financial reasons, Crisci started a side project called Old Canes and Jordan Geiger also left Appleseed Cast. At this point it was uncertain whether the band would ever release another album.

It was not until 2005 that the remaining band members Crisci, Pillar and Young decided to take on Nathan Richardson as the new drummer and to sign a contract with the Militia Group label . There the album Peregrine was released in April 2006. In the same year Nathan Richardson left the band again and was replaced by Aaron Coker. Coker accompanied the band until the release of the next studio album Sagarmatha in 2009. Bassist Marc Young was the second musician who had already decided to study and therefore decided against staying in the band.

Since the release of Sagarmatha , the founding members Christopher Crisci and Aaron Pillar were initially considered to be the only real band members who were only to be supplemented by a drummer and a bassist on tours. These roles were filled by Nate Whitman (bass) and John Momberg (drums).

In June 2011 the EP Middle States was released .

Later in 2011 it was initially declared that Pillar on tour would also have to be represented, as he and his wife had raised a catering company that did not allow longer absences. He was represented by Ted Stevens, who otherwise works for Cursive and Mayday . Then Aaron Pillar's departure was officially announced. The reasons for this, in addition to running his catering company, also gave different ideas between himself and the rest of the band regarding the further musical development. The musical separation from his long-time band mate Crisci was a friendly one. Meanwhile, Pillar has founded the band MonsoonLazer.

The release of the new studio album Illumination Ritual via Graveface Records is announced for April 9, 2013 . In addition to Crisci and Whitman, Taylor Holenbeck (guitar) and Nathan Wilder (drums) are now among the band members.
