The Citadel (unofficial name, original name P 8520 ) refers to a peak in the west of the Alaska range in Alaska (USA).
The Citadel is located in the Kichatna Mountains 112 km southwest of Denali in the Denali National Preserve south of Denali National Park . The Citadel is one of a group of peaks known as Cathedral Spiers . On the east flank is the upper end of the Shadows Glacier , on the north flank the Shelf Glacier and on the west flank of the Cul-de-Sac Glacier , all of which flow north. A ridge leads to the mountain Kichatna Spire, 1.29 km south .
Ascent history
The first ascent was made by William Katra, Don Fredrickson and Ludwig Ferche on August 3, 1972. Further ascents followed in 1976 and 1978. Several difficult climbing routes lead up to the summit on the eastern flank. The route up the Supa Dupa Couloir (ED4: WI6 +, 1130 m) was the first to succeed on May 2nd and 3rd, 2003 Mike Turner, Stuart McAleese and Ollie Sanders. On the eastern flank there is also the so-called Hypa Zypa Couloir , a narrow, steep mountain gully of difficulty (ED: AI5 +, M6 +, 5.10R, A3, 1100 m). From April 5 to 7, 2013, Ben Erdmann, Jess Roskelley and Kristoffer Szilas climbed the summit for the first time using this route.
