The Drag is a 1966 Canadian animated short film directed by Carlos Marchiori . It was made for the Department of National Health and Welfare. The French language version is called L'Homme Cheminée .

action

A man is lying on the couch with a psychiatrist. He smokes continuously while asking the psychiatrist to help him. He reconstructs his addiction to cigarettes. He was a normal child, but grew up in a family that always smoked. When he was a little older, he tried his first cigarette - a stub he found in an ashtray. He felt sick. He was always the underdog at school, as all the other boys in the class smoked. In order to be accepted into their circle, he tried a cigarette, but he felt sick again and did not start smoking. As he grew up, he often wondered why other men looked so much more attractive than him and he studied western heroes, muscle men and musicians. One day he noticed that all these men were smoking. He started smoking himself, felt strong, courageous and attractive, quickly got a girlfriend and impressed with a cigarette and a fast car. The advertising suggested only good things to him. Over time the cigarette took on a central role in his life, he smoked more and more and neglected other things, such as exquisite food, when he could smoke instead.

Occasionally the man tried to get rid of the cigarette but always felt bad and started smoking again. When he heard on TV that smoking causes cancer, he finally turned to the psychiatrist in despair. He advises him to first make himself aware that he really wants to quit and smoke one cigarette after the other during the consultation hours with the man. The man flees the practice. At home he turns on the gas in despair and cries. After a while - the gas has already spread throughout the room - he decides to smoke a cigarette quickly. The lighter goes on and causes a huge explosion. The man remains stunned in the ruins of his apartment.
