action

It's been thirty years since the sailing ship “Amaryllis” sank in a hurricane. Geneva Reade, the captain's widow, is still waiting for a sign from her husband from the bottom of the sea. Over the years she has resisted her family's urging to give up her lonely home on the coast. When her granddaughter Jenny, who is supposed to support her grandmother with a broken ankle, comes to visit, she too falls under the spell of the mysterious atmosphere on the coast. One night there actually comes a sign in the form of the ship's figurehead washed up , an image of the captain's young bride at the time, with an amaryllis flower in her hair. But the sea demands the figure back, because otherwise the ship would not be able to find its way to the bottom of the sea without its eyes . The old woman refuses to return the deposit, and the weather deteriorates. Only when the storm devastated the house and imminent demise threatened, she reluctantly releases the figure again, after which the raging sea calms down. In the morning she decides to give in to her son George's urging and follow him into the nearby town. But what the sea washes now - is a red amaryllis ...

criticism

“Around 1880 an eleven-year-old girl on the coast of New England is involved in mysterious and fantastic events about her grandmother, who has been waiting for a sign from her drowned husband for 30 years. An atmospheric, well-photographed story with elements of the horror novel, in which an appeal for mutual human acceptance and the unity of man and nature flow. The content-related statement often takes a back seat to the formal ambition. "
