The Gamers is a 2002 low-budget film by Dead Gentlemen Productions that caricatures pen and paper role-playing games . The film was written and directed by Matt Vancil and produced by Dead Gentlemen Productions. The film was not dubbed in German, there is only poor quality German subtitling. A sequel called The Gamers: Dorkness Rising was planned for mid-2007 and shown several times in Columbus, Ohio in early July 2007 . The film has been on sale since September 2008. In August 2013, the third part, The Gamers: Hands of Fate , was published, in which the topic was expanded to include trading card games .

action

The Gamers plays ironically with stereotypes of role players and player characters and parodies rules discussions and unrealistic game situations.

The film is about a student role-playing group whose fantasy heroes try to defeat the villain "The Shadow" in one of their adventures . The plot alternates again and again between the players sitting at the table, who are discussing with the game master or celebrating spectacular successes, and the imaginary adventurers who are exactly what happens at the table. Often strange situations arise as a result of carelessness during play or due to the interpretation of rules. For example, sleepers take part in a conversation or a thief - just because he can - steals the pants of a tavern guest without the latter noticing.

Player characters

The following player characters belong to the imaginary adventurer group:

  • Rogar the barbarian : a muscle man when he doesn't have to remove barriers
  • Newmoon the Elf : always expects an ambush and shoots arrows around five corners
  • Ambrose the Magician : is terrified of water , which contributes to his early demise
  • Nimble the thief : steals everything that is not riveted and nailed down and shoots his opponent from behind with a ballista
  • Mark the Berserker : Most of the time he just stands there in silence as his player meets his girlfriend instead of taking part in the game round; if he gets into a rage, he single-handedly defeats an army
  • Magellan the Magician : the trustworthy substitute for Ambrose, who is led by the same player after Ambrose's death
