The Ghost And The Machine is an Austrian - German band consisting of Andi Lechner (vocals, resonator guitar ), Heidi Fial ( double bass ) and Matthias Macht ( drums ). The style of the trio is described as folk with elements of blues , folk , jazz and pop music .

history

Initially, Lechner, who was studying jazz guitar with Karl Ratzer in Vienna , began The Ghost And The Machine as a solo project. After a year, Heidi Fial joined the double bass and shortly afterwards the debut album, which was financed by a crowdfunding campaign, was recorded in Dresden by Edgar M. Roethig. Shortly before that, drummer Matthias Macht , who had previously performed with free jazz musician Günter Sommer , joined the band and can also be heard on the debut album.

In the course of time, the trio developed an independent sound, which is not least due to the unusual instrumentation. In addition to an old Bohemian double bass, this consists of resonator guitars from the 1920s, as well as an eccentrically constructed drum kit that uses old circus drums, among other things. In addition to musical influences, the band also draws heavily on influences from the fields of literature and the visual arts .

In September 2018 The Ghost And The Machine presented their second album red rain tires , which was released on the Viennese indie label Noise Appeal Records . In terms of content and music, a continuation of the reduced sound of the first album, electric guitar and instruments such as banjo and lap steel guitar were increasingly used. The album was recorded and co-produced by Chris Neuschmid (formerly Mono and Nikitaman ), who can also be heard as a guest musician.

The band has so far performed in Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland and Portugal.
