The Global Experience (formerly Solar Net International eV) is an international non-profit organization that is involved in global and development education and in social and ecological projects .

history

The German association The Global Experience eV was founded in summer 2005 (then under the name "Solar Net International") by a group of students and teachers at the Schillergymnasium in Münster . The aim of the group was to bring young people from different countries together in projects and thus to sustainably strengthen the intercultural dialogue . In 2006 the association was awarded the North-South Development Prize of the City of Münster at the local level . A short time later, a wide variety of media projects succeeded in reaching a broad public via the Internet . The association published video language courses on its YouTube channel, among other things, which were well received by language-loving young people around the world.

In 2011 the association renamed itself "The Global Experience" in agreement with the project managers of its international network, which at that time comprised over 8000 registered members from 160 nations. The new name should focus more on the main purpose of the association, the promotion of global learning and intercultural exchange programs.

Online community

The positive response to the YouTube offers made it possible for The Global Experience to build up a global online community via its own web portal, on which several thousand members from over 150 countries have since registered. On the website, schoolchildren and students from all over the world present reports from their everyday lives, discuss global topics and find offers for intercultural learning programs. The web portal received the World Summit Youth Award in Graz in autumn 2011, which honors the best projects worldwide to implement the UN Millennium Development Goals with the help of digital media.

Projects and activities

The Global Experience initiates and promotes projects of global learning and education for sustainable development. In addition to these globally oriented projects and campaigns, local GE groups (in addition to Germany, also in Poland, Vietnam, Belgium, Colombia and Zimbabwe) carry out independent projects.

Since 2005 the association has organized regular exchange trips to promote intercultural understanding. In February 2006, the GE youth group Münster published a series of interviews on the subject of "Women in German and Namibian Society" together with the partner students of the Baumgartsbrunn Institute for Domestic Sciences. On May 9, 2006, Federal President Horst Köhler awarded the project the special “Girls Worlds” prize from Welthungerhilfe .

In spring 2007, pupils and students of the Global Experience Groups Germany, Namibia and Poland in Namibia produced the children's film “About those two” in the local language Khoekhoegowab , which has since been shown regularly in the holiday program of the Namibian public television broadcaster NBC . The film premiered in autumn 2007 at the CINEMA in Münster and won third prize in the FOCUS magazine's student competition, “Schule macht Zukunft”.

Since 2007, the association and its partners in Poland have regularly held international youth conferences at which schoolchildren and students from all over the world come together for two to three weeks in the summer in Germany and Poland.

In the summer of 2011, The Global Experience started the "International Reporters" project. On the website www.internationalreporters.org an editorial team of schoolchildren and students from 20 nations reports on cultural topics, topics of sustainable development as well as the social and political perspectives of young people in their home countries. The project was recognized as a Good Practice Project for Education for Sustainable Development in Saarbrücken in November 2011 as part of the WeltWeitWissen 2011 congress .
