Abby Sutton is on the spot. She works for the exploitative Mr. Singh in a small-town photo studio as an employee. Although she dreams of realizing herself artistically, she does not have the courage to break out of her life. On the eve of December 1, her childhood friend, the jack-of-all-trades Josh Barton, returns to town. He runs a travel blog . According to Christmas tradition, they visit Abby's parents and he takes a family picture on a camera. Unfortunately the old roll camera has disappeared. On the same evening, Grandpa Abby presents her with an advent calendar that once belonged to his wife.

On December 1st, the advent calendar opens as if by magic. Abby finds boots in them. On the evening of the same day Josh gives her a pair of boots from Italy. At first she thinks this is a coincidence, but the next day she finds a Christmas tree in the advent calendar. In a near miss with a Christmas tree, she meets Ty Walker, who pulls himself out of the affair charmingly. The next day she finds a candy cane in the advent calendar. In an accident involving an oversized candy cane, Abby injures her arm and is taken to the office by Ty, who treats her. The two start dating. And again and again elements of the advent calendar can be found in Abby's everyday life.

But the brief fall in love is soon followed by disillusionment. Abby can't quite make friends with Ty. Especially since she has wonderful dates with him, but feels like she doesn't really get to know him. After a conversation with her grandfather and two homeless people from the soup kitchen, quasi the wise men from the Orient that she found on the calendar that morning, and after he made fun of her calendar, she ended the relationship.

She gets a new professional opportunity at the Christmas market. She is supposed to photograph the annual Christmas tree opening for the mayor. This promises her a new job. But Josh accidentally deletes the pictures and Abby loses both her old and her new job. After a big argument, she hides in her apartment. The advent calendar ends up in the car.

Only her sister Sarah can free her from her lethargy. She is organizing an exhibition of Abby's artwork at an auction for the local elementary school. The main prize of the auction is a photo session with Abby. By mistake, the advent calendar also ends up in the auction and is bought by an unknown bidder.

Shortly before Christmas, the mayor who bought the photo session gets in touch. She has family photos taken and offers herself as a new client. The calendar actually comes home on Christmas Day . The last door opens with a snowflake. Then the back wall opens with a meeting point and a time.

She finds Josh at the meeting point. He has prepared a very special surprise as a Christmas present: he has rented a shop that both of them can use as a studio. The two kiss and start a relationship.

A year later, on November 30th, the annual Christmas party takes place, this time in their shop, which is now called "Holiday Calendar".
