No mercy for Tom Dooley (original title: The Legend of Tom Dooley ) is a black and white - Western by director Ted Post from the year 1959 , of the folk song Tom Dooley based.

action

The young southern soldiers Tom Dooley, Country Boy and Abel ambush a stagecoach and kill two soldiers of the northern army. Abel is also injured in the attack. A fatally injured southern soldier who was also in the carriage tells the boys about the end of the civil war before his death. This makes the boys realize their crime. The passengers left behind ensure that the news is spread quickly.

On the way to the doctor, Dooley visits his lover Laura Foster, who is shocked when Tom confesses to her the crime. Tom first leaves Laura to take Abel to the doctor. Laura's father notices the boys advancing. The doctor's grandson discovers the unwanted visit and reports it to the sheriff. Country Boy puts the boy on the street and thus finds out about the alarm in good time. Abel is tied to a horse only in a makeshift way. While trying to leave the city, the refugees get into a shooting with the sheriff and his assistants. Abel does not survive the rapid escape.

Laura's new admirer Charlie Grayson confronts Tom and suggests that he cover him up if he leaves Laura alone and disappears. There is a fight between Tom and Charlie. The victorious Tom rides to Morrow's farm to get Laura. Before they can leave the farm in a carriage, Laura's father confronts the lovers without being able to stop them. The two go to a justice of the peace to get married.

Grayson meanwhile argues with Laura's father, who claims Laura is in town, which Grayson doubts. Using the car tracks, Grayson can follow Tom and Laura and pose them shortly after the wedding ceremony. There is a shooting between Tom and Charlie. This is decided by a rattlesnake attack on Laura when Tom takes care of Laura and thus forgets the duel.

In the meantime, Country Boy has been caught and arrested by government troops. Once in town, the soldiers and country boy learn of Dooley's arrest from the stable owner. When Boy's horse is led into the box, he uses the opportunity to escape. Disguised as a soldier in the North, Country Boy turns Laura in to persuade her to help Tom escape.

The disguised boy tries to free Tom from prison with the help of his uniform and the arrest warrant, but the skeptical sheriff has to be persuaded by force after initial success, when the doctor enters the office and recognizes Boy.

Grayson discovered Laura on the street when she organized a horse and wanted to ride to the agreed meeting point. Grayson followed her and turned Boy and Tom. In the subsequent shootout, Grayson first injures Boy, and Tom attacks Grayson. During the scuffle, Grayson pulls Tom's knife and tries to stab him. Laura throws herself, worried about Tom in the fray but is accidentally fatally injured by Tom, who is just gaining the upper hand. With the last of his strength, Boy shoots Grayson.

Destroyed on the ground, Tom did not resist the arrest of the pursuers arriving from the city.
