The Man that Got Away is a song by Harold Arlen (music) and Ira Gershwin (lyrics) released in 1954.

Arlen and Gershwin wrote The Man That Got Away for the film A new star in the sky (original title: A Star Is Born , 1954), directed by George Cukor . Judy Garland had a leading role , who also introduces the song in the film. Garland, who had already recorded the song on September 3, 1953, played it in front of a few friends while the film was being recorded in an empty nightclub, which required a total of 27 takes. The film song gave Judy Garland one of the biggest hits of her career. The Man that Got Away received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1955 . The American Film Institute named it to the AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Songs list .

Judy Garland's recording of the song with the Ray Heindorf Orchestra was released in the United States on Columbia Records (40270), coupled with Here's What I'm Here For , in Europe on Philips RB366. The song was recorded in the second half of the 1950s by Georgia Gibbs (Mercury 70430), Ralph Flanagan , Jeri Southern / Sonny Burke , Les Brown / Bing Crosby , Tommy Dorsey , Ella Fitzgerald , Géo Daly , Modern Jazz Quartet , among others with Jimmy Giuffre , Gerald Wiggins , Jane Harvey , Oscar Peterson , Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis junior . In later years Ruby Braff , Julie Wilson , Sheena Easton , Ross Tompkins , Barbara Lea , Rosemary Clooney / Count Basie Orchestra , Bill Charlap , Harold Mabern and Nicki Parrott performed him . Tom Lord lists 67 versions of the song.
