The Navigators , also known as The Navigators, is a Ken Loach film about the privatization of British Rail .

action

The film shows a group of railway workers who have been working together for years in the Sheffield ( Yorkshire ) railway depot : Paul, Mick, Len and Gerry. Gerry is a trade unionist . Because of the privatization of the British railways, more and more workers in their depot are taking their hats and dismissal bonuses and conforming to the laws of the free market. You hire out on worse terms as a subcontractor in the same place as before. The security conditions are also worse. This goes so far that they cover up the true cause of death of their colleague in order to keep their job when the colleague is hit by a locomotive while doing track construction .

criticism

“A committed 'workers film' that shows the dialectics of private and public, solidarity and class consciousness. The semi-documentary staging conveys precise information about British society and its working world. "
