The Paradise (cross-reference: The Paradise - House of Dreams ) is a British television series produced by the BBC and initially broadcast in two seasons on BBC One from 2012 to 2013 . The idea and most of the scripts came from Bill Gallagher. The series is basically an adaptation of Émile Zola's novel The Paradise of the Ladies , with the setting from Paris to northern England being relocated and the second season being completely detached from the original.
The series was discontinued by the BBC after two seasons due to insufficient audience ratings.
content
The young Denise Lovett moves to a small town in the 1870s to take up a job as a saleswoman in her uncle Edmund's textile store. However, since the large department store “The Paradise” has just opened its doors right across the street, sales in Edmund Lovett's business are steadily declining and he can no longer afford to employ his niece. Out of necessity, but also fascinated by the magnificence on display, Denise starts working in the department store, where she is trained as a saleswoman in women's clothing by the strict Miss Audrey.
The owner of the department store, the widowed John Moray, soon becomes aware of the new employee. Denise comes into conflict with Katherine Glendenning, daughter of Lord Glendenning, and Clara, a saleswoman also employed at "Paradise", both of whom are interested in John Moray. Moray falls in love with Denise and cancels her planned wedding to Katherine Glendenning, incurring her father's anger.
At the beginning of the second season, Moray lost the ownership rights to "Paradise". After Lord Glendenning's death, they were passed on to his daughter Katherine, who married the former soldier and future businessman Tom Weston, who is now running the department store. All attempts by Moray to regain ownership of the department store fail. While he had to put up with failures, Denise, soon to be the successor to Miss Audrey, was able to convince Weston with her business ideas. Moray finds it difficult to accept the new role constellation - an equal partner or even a competitor instead of a woman he wants to protect.
In the end, Denise quits her job at “Paradise” in order to open a cosmetics store in her uncle's now vacant shop. This opens up a perspective of being successful autonomously and still retaining Moray.
