The three members had been friends with each other since their youth. They met in the local hip-hop scene in Boston. They worked together for the first time in the late 1990s as part of Fakts Ones university radio show . In 2000 they finally gave themselves the name "The Perceptionists" and officially formed a trio. In 2004 the first release appeared, a mixtape called The Razor , which was aimed at the underground . The official debut album Black Dialogue followed in 2005 .

Subsequently, however, the group separated due to personal differences. It wasn't until 2016 that the members made music together again, on Mr. Lif's solo album Don't Look Down . After that, Mr. Lif and acrobatics began, without fact one, to work on another Perceptionist work. They were inspired by the reconciliation between Q-Tips and Phife Dawg , which led to the recording of a final A-Tribe-Called-Quest album shortly before Phife Dawg's death . The long player was released in 2017 by the Mello Music Group label under the title Resolution .
