The high school student Fūtarō Uesugi is gifted, but leads an arduous life: his mother has died, he has no friends and his father has accumulated a large mountain of debt.

When the children of the wealthy Nakano family move to his school, he has the chance to earn money himself. So he becomes the tutor of the quintuplets . Unfortunately, Fūtarō quickly realizes that they all share something in common, although each has a different character. They have no interest in learning and are therefore constantly poor at school. A couple of the five sisters see him as a stranger and do not like it when Fūtarō visits them at home. However, over time he managed to gain the trust of the sisters and helped them to get better grades.

It is revealed that he will end up marrying one of the five sisters. But the identity remains secret.

Reviews

The Quintessential Quintuplets was largely perceived positively for its elements of harem and romantic comedy . Paul Jensen from the Anime News Network awarded four out of five possible points and found that “the jokes were funny and the characters tolerable to lovable, the amount of fan service did not get out of hand and there were no gruesome or disgusting plot twists that would destroy the story. “Patrick Frye also praised the fact that there is hardly any fan service within the series. In addition, the five female characters are far more than mere stereotypes , instead they develop into independent characters who in turn create a funny dynamic in interaction with the male protagonist . Kyle Rogacion praised the plot of the series on Goomba Stomp, but criticized the animation style and the gags, which often contain fan service elements.

The manga series was the fifth best-selling manga series in the first half of 2019 (November 2018 to May 2019) thanks to the release of the anime with 2.9 million copies sold. The manga received an award at the Kodansha Manga Prize in the Best Shōnen Manga category together with To Your Eternity by Yoshitoki Ōima .
