The Reef - swim for your life (Original title: The Reef ) is an Australian thriller from 2010. It is the second film by Andrew Traucki after Black Water . It is about a group of friends who sail off the Indonesian coast and are attacked by a great white shark after a shipwreck .

action

Luke invites his friend Matt and his girlfriend Suzie to go sailing on a coral reef . Matt's sister Kate (Luke's ex-girlfriend) and the sailor Warren also go on board. On the second day of the trip, the yacht hits a reef, loses its keel and capsizes. She keeled up with a badly damaged hull.

Luke decides to swim to the nearest island ( Turtle Island ). While the others are sitting on the hull of the ship, Warren activates the distress transmitter, but Luke explains that the transmitter is out of date and that the distress signal can only be picked up by aircraft, but that they are off the flight routes. When Luke suggests that the others swim with him to the island, an estimated 12 miles away, Warren points out that there are sharks in the area . Kate, Suzie and Matt follow Luke into the water and swim towards the island. Warren stays behind on the wreck.

You will find the torso of a water turtle whose head was bitten off by a shark. From the hull of the yacht, Warren spots a great white shark orbiting the ship. Shortly afterwards, the group of swimmers is attacked by the shark. He swims towards her but only touches Kate before disappearing. Kate and Suzie are in shock and are supported by Matt and Luke. Kate lost her buoyancy aid. When Matt tries to get the buoyancy aid, the shark attacks him and bites off his leg. The others try to help him, but he'll bleed to death in minutes. After dark, Luke, Kate and Suzie are attacked again by something unknown, but without consequences. Suzie accuses Luke of persuading her to leave the protective wreckage.

In the morning the group drifted into an area of the reef where the water is so shallow that they can stand and rest. In the distance they see a large rock formation and swim towards it. Suddenly a fin appears, which at first scares the three, but then turns out to be that of a dolphin, which makes them laugh. When a fin appears again, they suspect the dolphin again, but suddenly a shark appears and attacks her and kills Suzie. After a short rest in shallow water, where they swear everlasting love, Luke and Kate reach the rock formation. Luke helps Kate on the rocks. Before he can follow her with Kate's help, the shark pulls him into the depths.

The written epilogue reports that Kate is rescued by a fishing boat the following day. The search for Warren and the wreck remains unsuccessful.

criticism

"Predictable animal horror film without the right timing, which relies entirely on the attacks of the animal protagonist."
