The Swell Season - The love story after Once (Original title The Swell Season ) is an American documentary from 2011.

action

After the success of the Irish film Once and an Oscar win, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová achieved sudden global success. While Hansard is used to touring, this experience is a completely new one for Irglová. She doesn't feel like a celebrity and uncomfortable with the constant attention and the many photos. The relationship between the two threatens to break up.

background

When the band The Swell Season went on tour after the success of the film Once , Hansard asked his film teacher Carlo Mirabella-Davis to document the tour. The documentary was filmed by Mirabella-Davis and his co-directors Chris Dapkins and Nick August-Perna between 2007 and 2010. Originally, the documentary was supposed to be a classical music documentary. That changed, however, when the directors were shooting at Hansard's parents. The film became more of a documentary, documenting the burden of dreams and the gradual breakup of a romantic relationship. During the filming, the relationship between Hansard and Irglova ended. The film was shot in black and white and shows the protagonists Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová on their tour and at home. It was cut from over 200 hours of footage.

criticism

Kevin Huber from Filmstarts thinks that the film is interesting and worth seeing for viewers who know the film Once . It is an excellent bonus material for the Once DVD, but it only functions to a limited extent as an independent documentary "about Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, their music and their love". Lisa Kennedy of The Denver Post also believes that the makers of the film assumed that viewers would know Once . The perfect audience are those who know the film and who are also fascinated by Markéta Irglová's acceptance speech.

Carsten Knox from The Coast says the film is indispensable for fans of music and offers a surprisingly intimate glimpse into the consequences of unexpected celebrity.

Awards Daily Sasha Stone believes The Swell Season is a standout film that he thinks deserves an Oscar nomination.

The Stanford Daily describes the film as "a painfully honest love story in an extraordinary musical context". Brian Tucker of Star News Online also believes that The Swell Season is one of the better documentaries because it is so open and honest. They show the love and the pressure to be successful after years of work.

Publications

In 2011, The Swell Season won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival . Many other international performances followed. In Germany the film was released on DVD in 2012. Further publications followed in Spain, Switzerland, Austria (StudioCanal), Australia (Icon), Korea (Jin Jin) and Canada (Mongrel).
