The Touch was a jazz - funk - band , the early 1980s in Frankfurt was founded. The band was produced and promoted by Frank Farian .

The band consisted of the members Terence Trent D'Arby ( vocals ), Marc Burton ( rhythm guitar ), Frank Itt ( bass ), Detlef Vogel ( lead guitar , keyboards ), Benny Braun ( drums ), Stefan Lupp (keyboards) , Mike Williams ( trumpet , flugelhorn ) and Peter Wolf ( saxophone ). The band quickly made a name for themselves in German-speaking countries with their own compositions and especially with their live performances . The Touch's jazz-funk sound corresponded to the zeitgeist of a very selective funk scene of those years, which produced bands like Incognito , Brand New Heavies , Level 42 , Deefunkt and other representatives of this genre, which, however, had more success with more commercial pieces.

In 1983 the band won the German Phono Academy Award.

Terence Trent Darby left the band at the beginning of 1984 and shortly afterwards started an internationally successful career as a solo artist with a different spelling of his name as Terence Trent D'Arby . He is now called Sananda Maitreya .

The Touch replaced him with the singer Chicquita Codling. The band's studio recordings appeared on smaller record companies, which was probably one of the reasons for the rather moderate commercial record success. In 1989, three years after the breakup, Frank Farian released earlier recordings of the band with the album "Early Works" in a partially remixed version on Polydor. The repertoire of the band consisted of many powerful pieces as well as sensitive ballads, which were sung by Terence Trent Darby in his distinctive way.

The Touch disbanded in 1986 and the individual musicians have since devoted themselves to their own projects.
