The Underground Youth is a British post-punk band from Manchester / Berlin .

history

The Underground Youth was founded in 2008 by Craig Dyer. He published his music on the Internet from 2009. The first albums were available free of charge from the Bandcamp online music service . He also added his music to film scenes ( Permanent Vacation , Persona , Vinyl, etc.) and uploaded these videos to YouTube . This aroused great interest, and The Underground Youth gained a worldwide fan base. The band first teamed up with the indie label Flower Power Records and switched to Fuzz Club Records from the album The Perfect Enemy for God . Dyer gathered live musicians to tour his project, including his wife, Olya Dyer. The Underground Youth has toured Europe several times since 2012. Due to their increasing popularity, the first pressings of their early LPs are out of print and have been reissued. The band is originally from Manchester, but now lives in Berlin. In the meantime, Craig and Olya Dyer lived in St. Petersburg .

style

The Underground Youth plays dark post-punk with influences from shoegazing and psychedelic rock . Often a monotonous mood predominates, carried by catchy melodies that sometimes degenerate into a wall of sound . The songs get by without refrains in order to reinforce the lyrics with the musical atmosphere alone. While the first two albums, Morally Barren and Voltage, are still in the lo-fi psychedelic style, the albums Mademoiselle and Sadovaya create the band's sound. The band not only uses music as a medium of expression, but also consciously uses other media to convey feelings. In addition to references from idols in video clips and on record covers, an increasing number of own clips and pictures of Dyer and his environment have been produced since 2010. The album A Lo-Fi Cinematic Landscape in particular illustrates the close connection that Dyer sees between music and film. In addition to musicians like Bob Dylan , The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Jesus and Mary Chain and the film, Dyer also mentions Russian literature as a major influence on his music.
