The Young Tradition were a 1960s British folk band formed by Peter Bellamy , Royston Wood and Heather Wood . In the course of her career she recorded a total of three albums, on which she sang mostly British folk songs a cappella .

Band history

The band was formed on April 18, 1965. Most of the songs were traditional British folk songs that were performed without instrumental accompaniment. The group was strongly influenced by the music of the Copper Family , who also recorded many songs without instrumentalization. She expanded the repertoire of pure folk music to include songs she composed herself and which were deeply rooted in English folk. An example of this is Shanty Chicken on a Raft, written by Cyril Tawney .

When London became the center of British folk revival in the late 1960s , the members moved to the city and shared a house with John Renbourn , Bert Jansch and Anne Briggs .

The three albums and one EP were released through Transatlantic Records . You also worked with Shirley Collins . The result The Holly Bears the Crown was published in 1969. A single from it was released via Argo Records in 1974, but due to the band's partial rights to the album, it could only be released after their dissolution. The entire album was finally released in 1995 through Fledg'ling Records . Transatlantic also released a compilation in 1969: The Young Tradition Sampler .

Her later works were more influenced by the music of the Middle Ages . Galleries was musically enriched by Dolly Collins , Dave Swarbrick , David Munrow and the Early Music Consort .

In 1969 the group broke up due to musical differences. The last concert was at Cecil Sharp House , the seat of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, in October 1969.

Royston Wood and Heather Wood continued to work together after the breakup and released the album "No Relation" in 1977, on which Peter Bellamy appeared as a guest.

Royston Wood continued to work with Swan Arcade and died in a car accident in 1990. Peter Bellamy committed suicide in 1991. Heather Wood has lived in New York since 1977 .
