Thea Bry (born May 15, 1911 in Cologne , German Empire ; † November 29, 2000 , United States ), née Hackelberg, was a German-American psychiatrist and training analyst .

Life

Bry was born as the only child of the wealthy Jewish fur trader Louis Hackelberg (1890-1975) and his wife Martha (1887-1979). After graduating from the “Städtische Studienanstalt der Realgymnasiale zu Berlin” in 1931, she began studying medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin. During this time she met the law student Gerhard Bry (1911–1996), who in 1932 became a member of the New Beginning group . Later she had training analyzes with Carl Müller-Braunschweig , among others , but broke them off on the pretext of feeling misunderstood as a Jew by a non-Jew and so as not to endanger Gerhard Bry. In the autumn of 1932 she went to Palestine , Bry accompanied her to Italy. After a so-called “Passport Marriage” with John Henkin, Thea Henkin returned to Berlin in 1934 and switched from studying medicine to psychology. She emigrated to Great Britain with Gerhard Bry in 1936 and from there to the USA in 1939. They married in 1939.

Bry worked at Fairleigh Dickinson University and then in the Newark Ward preschool program . She was a co-founder of the YCS Institute for Infant Mental Health and has been committed to improving the understanding of children and parents and their relationships with one another throughout her life.
