history

View of the theater garden from the north

Today's theater garden is located on the site of the former Bremen City Theater , which was built there in 1843 . During the Second World War , the theater was destroyed in 1944 and was not rebuilt after the war. Instead, the theater garden was opened in 1966 , reminiscent of the destroyed city theater. In 1968 the sculpture Aegina by the artist Gerhard Marcks was installed in the park. The park underwent a redesign in 2001 on the occasion of the Wall anniversary. The theater garden was reopened on May 18, 2001. The theater garden is recorded as part of the Wallanlagen cultural monument .

layout

The theater garden can be entered from the north and south through entrance gates. In the southern part of the complex, when entering the park to the right of the entrance gate, there is the sculpture Aegina . The terrain rises to the north and the garden is terraced. There are several white benches on each level, so that the design of the entire facility resembles a theater with a rising grandstand. There are steps to the right and left of the benches, and flower beds parallel to the rows of seats. Several text panels are embedded in the paved paths, which remind, among other things, of the history of the city theater.
