TheoPrax

The teaching and learning method TheoPrax was developed in the mid-1990s by Peter Eyerer, Bernd Hefer and Dörthe Krause at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ( Pfinztal-Berghausen ). The aim is to use action-oriented and practice-oriented learning concepts that are implemented in cooperation with external partners from industry , research , service providers and municipalities , thereby increasing the motivation to learn . The method is designed as an "interface between school and business".

"TheoPrax" is a registered trademark of the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology.

The TheoPrax method

TheoPrax has the following key points:

  • interdisciplinary group lessons,
  • Project work that is integrated into curricula and study plans,
  • Working on topics with a "serious character" from the fields of business, research and industry
  • Work in order / offer relationships,
  • Training in project management, creativity techniques, communication, conflict management
  • Money goes to institutions, not people.

The foundation offers further training for teaching staff. The method can be used from grade 8 of all types of schools and at the university and is also used in a pilot phase from grade 5.

According to its own information, 1050 projects have been carried out nationwide to date.

The TheoPrax method should be particularly suitable for introducing learners to the idea of sustainable development - for example in engineering studies. TheoPrax is cited by independent experts as a positive example of the cooperation between school and extracurricular learning locations in technical training. Entrepreneurial aspects such as the acceptance and processing of research assignments are also part of the TheoPrax method. From TheoPrax one hopes u. a. improved recruiting in the field of engineering and chemical engineering.

Promotion of the TheoPrax concept

TheoPrax center

The TheoPrax center is located in the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology in Pfinztal . A further 13 communication centers have so far been installed in Germany for regional support and another at SENAI in Salvador, Brazil. The TheoPrax Center is a member of the initiative group “Entrepreneurship in Schools” of the BMWi and in the LernortLabor - Federal Association of Schoolchildren Laboratories, as well as a founding member of the Friends of the Science Academy Baden-Württemberg.

TheoPrax Foundation

In 2001 the TheoPrax Foundation was founded to promote science and research as well as training and further education, in particular to promote the TheoPrax methodology.

TheoPrax Prize

The TheoPrax Prize has been announced annually nationwide since 2002, in which teams of pupils and students are honored for outstanding project work that has been integrated into the lessons in cooperation with external project sponsors. Patrons were previously u. a. Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and the former President of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research e. V. , Hans-Jörg Bullinger , 2014 Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel .
