Theo Geisel

Theo Geisel (born August 24, 1948 in Limburg an der Lahn ) is a German theoretical physicist .

life and career

Geisel studied physics at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Regensburg , where he received his doctorate in 1975 on the theory of Raman scattering in ammonium halides . He then worked at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart from 1976-77 and at the Xerox PARC research center in Palo Alto in 1978/79 . In 1982 he completed his habilitation. In 1988/89 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Würzburg and from 1989 at the University of Frankfurt before becoming professor at the University of Göttingen in 1996 . There he was also director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (the former Max Planck Institute for Flow Research) and coordinator of the Bernstein Center Computational Neuroscience Göttingen (BCCN Göttingen), which he has headed since its foundation in 2005. He has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since 2013 and retired in September 2016.

Geisel is married and has two children. He plays the flute and saxophone in both classical and jazz environments.

Scientific fields of work

Geisel deals with issues of nonlinear dynamics and quantum chaos, with applications, for example, to transport in semiconductor nanostructures and in the dynamics of neural networks, e.g. B. neural synchronization and pattern formation in the visual cortex. Prizes and awards
