Theodor "Theo" Gerardy (born August 3, 1908 in Euskirchen ; † June 19, 1986 in Hanover ) was a German geodesist , paper historian, watermark and incunabula researcher , co-founder of the International Working Group of Paper Historians (IPH) and co-founder of the Gauß Society.

Life

Gerardy took the land surveyor examination in 1930 and developed into one of the leading geodesists of his time. From 1954 he headed the largest land registry office in Lower Saxony in Hanover. He carried out numerous technical and administrative innovations and made great contributions to surveying and cadastral affairs as well as in the field of property appraisal. In 1972 he was appointed Chief Surveying Director and retired the following year. He also became known through important publications on the determination of the market value of properties . His book The Practice of Real Estate Valuation became a standard work in real estate.

The subject of his dissertation in 1952 was the Gaussian triangulation of the Kingdom of Hanover and the Prussian property tax measurements. In 1953 Gerardy began collecting material for the Gauss commemorative volume, which was published on the 100th anniversary of the scholar's death in 1955. Then he went to the order and cataloging of the estate of Carl Friedrich Gauß in the Göttingen University Library . This work led him to the study of watermarks.

For this historical auxiliary science, Gerardy made significant methodological contributions to the reproduction accuracy of watermarks, dealt with questions of technical terminology, with the photographic registration of watermarks and recommended the abrasion method as a detailed process for watermark documentation. Groundbreaking were his considerations on the computer-aided recording of watermark evidence, which he published in the last year of his life and which he could no longer fully expand personally. It proposes the exact recording of various sieve parameters (position of the sieve side, number of warp lines, determination of the number of ribs, dimensions of the watermark) in order to create a database for the machine evaluation and to be able to select suitable subsets. As early as 1965, in a critical discussion with Gerhard Piccard , he had submitted proposals for the organization of a watermark collection, which would subsequently also prove to be very helpful for the establishment of watermark databases.

With watermark studies, he participated in incunabula research with regard to the Missale speciale and the history of printing and the dating of the Mainz Catholicon .

Gerardy was one of the twelve founding members of the International Association of Paper Historians in 1959 . 1963–1976 he was vice-president of this organization and from 1967 to 1976 he was the editor of the newsletter IPH Information .
