Theo Wallimann (born October 13, 1946 in Alpnach , Canton Obwalden ) is a Swiss biologist . From 1994 to mid-2008 he was adjunct professor and research group leader at the Institute for Cell Biology, Dept. for biology at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The Institute for Cell Biology was later relocated and renamed the "Institute for Molecular Health Sciences". Theo Wallimann was head of the Institute for Cell Biology at the ETH Zurich in 1995 and Deputy Head in 1996.

Life

Theo Wallimann studied biology at the ETH Zurich, where he completed his dissertation on " Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes and Myofibril Structure " in 1975 with Hans M. Eppenberger at the Institute of Cell Biology with distinction and an ETH medal.

With the help of a foreign scholarship of the Swiss National Science Foundation and the support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association USA (MDA) Theo Wallimann worked as a postdoctoral fellow and research associate at Andrew G. Szent-Gyorgyi at the Biology Department of Brandeis University in Boston, USA, on the topic of "myosin linked calcium regulation of muscle contraction ".

In 1981 Theo Wallimann returned to Switzerland with his family. He first worked as a research assistant and then as a senior assistant at the Institute for Cell Biology at ETH Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 1984 and taught as a private lecturer (PD). In 1994 Theo Wallimann was appointed adjunct professor at the ETH Zurich, where he worked with his research group at the Institute for Cell Biology and taught in the Department of Biology at the ETH Zurich. Theo Wallimann's research group focused on cellular bioenergetics , the atomic structure and molecular physiology of creatine kinases and AMP-activated protein kinase , which play an important role in energy homeostasis and the regulation of energy metabolism for health and various diseases play. Wallimann resigned from his post on May 31, 2008 and was retired.

Main scientific interests

  • The elucidation of the atomic structure, function and subzelläre compartmentalization and molecular physiology of creatine kinase (CK) and creatine transporter ( creatine transporter CRT)
  • The biological relevance of intracellular micro-compartmentalization and metabolite channeling through multi-enzyme complexes
  • The cell-supporting and neuro-protective effect of creatine supplementation for health (performance increase; learning and memory) and for various neuromuscular and neureodegenerative diseases (cell protection).
  • The elucidation of the molecular structure and function of AMP-stimulated protein kinase (AMPK), a kinase that acts as a regulator of cellular energy metabolism and for the regulation of nutrient-dependent cell signaling processes for health and diseases such as type 2 adult diabetes , Obesity , metabolic syndrome and cancer play a major role.

Memberships and honors

Theo Wallimann is a member of USGEB , FEBS , American Association for Cell Biology and Biophysical Society (USA).

In 2005 Wallimann received the Alfred Vogt Prize .

International Conferences

Theo Wallimann organized together with Roger Harris, GB, the international CREATINE-2015 conference on “Creatine in Health, Sport and Disease” (April 20-25, 2015) in Laufen, Germany. The lectures given at this congress were published in a special volume in the journal Amino Acids (Springer Verlag) (Aug. 2016) Vol 48 (8): 1439-2199.
