Life

Andreas Scharnagl, who was born in Heiligenkreuz near Plan , attended secondary school in Mies , entered the Osek Monastery on October 8, 1889 (solemn profession on November 1, 1893) and was given the religious name Theobald. After studying theology, he was ordained a priest in 1894. He was then a chaplain and, after studying philosophy and classical languages at the University of Prague, a high school professor in Pilsen and at the religious high school in Komotau . On April 18, 1912, he was elected abbot under the chairmanship of Theobald Grasböck , vicar general of the Austro-Hungarian Cistercians and abbot of Wilhering Abbey . Because of this position he was a member of the Bohemian state parliament until 1918 . He held the office of abbot until his death in 1943. He is buried in the monastery cemetery.

Although a large part of the monastery property had been expropriated by the Czechoslovak agrarian reform in 1921 , the collegiate church was renovated during his tenure and the collection of paintings by the art historian Dr. Josef Opitz will be reorganized. The cloister and the chapter house were restored in style in 1927 and in 1933 the main organ of the collegiate church was rebuilt and enlarged.
