Theoderich Hofstatter

Theoderich Hofstätter (born December 24, 1906 in Urfahr , † January 27, 1981 in Horn ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman, Cistercian and opponent of National Socialism .

life and work

Josef Hofstätter joined Wilhering Abbey and took the religious name Theoderich (after Dietrich / Theoderich von Kremsmünster ). In 1930 he made his solemn profession ; In 1931 he was ordained a priest. He worked as Konvikt Prefect and from 1938 as a cooperator in Schörfling am Attersee .

As a member of the resistance organization Greater Austrian Freedom Movement ( Jacob Kastelic group ) he was arrested by the Gestapo on July 29, 1940 and, like his abbot and uncle Bernhard Burgstaller , as well as several confreres, in the spring of 1941 in the Anrath prison near Krefeld (today: Willich I prison ) brought. On July 13, 1944, he was sentenced by the People's Court to 7 years in prison for “preparing for high treason” and was imprisoned in Straubing prison until the end of the war .

After the end of the war he was a pastor in Vorder Weißenbach and Theras (today: Sigmundsherberg ). He died as a clergyman and member of Wilhering Abbey.
