Bernhard Burgstaller

Bernhard Burgstaller OCist (born February 14, 1886 in Eidenberg , † November 1, 1941 in Anrath near Krefeld ) was abbot of Wilhering Abbey . He died in Nazi custody in 1941.

Petrus Burgstaller, who came from a farming family, entered the Cistercian Abbey of Wilhering on August 19, 1905, was dressed and given the religious name Bernhard. He made his perpetual profession on August 21, 1909 , was ordained a priest on July 31, 1910 , received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Vienna in 1915 and taught Latin and Greek at the Wilhering Collegiate High School in September 1938 until it was dissolved by the National Socialists . On November 29, 1938 he was elected Abbot of Wilhering by the convention to succeed the late Gabriel Fazeny . As such, he tried to resist the harassment of his abbey by the National Socialists . After the discovery of a resistance group that also included Cistercians from Wilhering, he was arrested on November 12, 1940 in Vienna and later transferred to the Anrath prison near Krefeld, where he was systematically starved. He died of malnutrition on November 1, 1941 . He was the only Austrian abbot who was murdered by the National Socialists.
