The Theodor Wolff Park is located in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg between Friedrichstrasse , Franz-Klühs Street, Rahel-Varnhagen Promenade and Wilhelmstrasse .

history

The park was created as part of the International Building Exhibition , with which the area in southern Friedrichstadt was to be developed. The plan was to provide the area along with the adjacent streets with typical Berlin block perimeter development. To this end, an international closer competition on Wilhelmstrasse was held in 1981 . The winners Bassenge, Puhan-Schulz and Partner as well as Rave and Partner then revised the block concept. However, after protests from the residents, the zoning plan was changed and a green area was provided in the southern part.

Another competition has now been launched, this time under the title Parkanlagen in southern Friedrichstadt. The first prize went to the architects Regina Poly and Dieter Pfannenstiel. In 1985 they started planning, which was implemented in 1988. As a recreation park , it was supposed to fill the gaps, together with other parks such as Besselpark , that had remained open for a long time due to the unrealized city motorway (the southern bypass ). In honor of the German writer Theodor Wolff , the park was named Theodor-Wolff-Park on September 23, 1993 - the 50th anniversary of Wollf's death .

The investment volume of the State of Berlin in the years 1986–1990 was around 2.36 million marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 2.01 million euros).

Use in the 21st century

As you approach the park, you will notice the two arched porticos . In the middle of the park, a triangular lawn was created, which is bordered by stones and hedges. To the west, the park is bounded by a football field . At the eastern end in the direction of Friedrichstrasse, the district administration had a memorial plaque for Theodor Wolff installed.

In 1991 a fountain with the title Jug with Cup was set up in the middle of the park for embellishment . Other sources refer to it as a non-birthday fountain . The work of art was designed by the sculptor Heinrich Brummack . One of the two objects is the somewhat distant table with a cup made on the same scale. The depiction is intended to illustrate a story from the fairy tale Alice in Wonderland . The plan was for a jet of water to flow from the jug over the heads of passers-by into a neighboring cup. The fountain has not been in operation for a long time (as of 2015). On July 18, 2007, a boules pitch was opened.
