Besselpark in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The Besselpark is located in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg on the streets of Besselstraße, Friedrichstraße and Enckestraße . It is named after the astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel , who worked at the nearby Berlin observatory .

history

After the Second World War , the area in southern Friedrichstadt was badly damaged. The architect Hans Scharoun was given the task of redeveloping the area as part of the Capital Competition in 1957. Was planned including a City Band, the Berlin-Mitte should be connected via one of four motorway tangents to the surrounding area. One of these tangents should run north of Mehringplatz . However, due to the division of Berlin , this plan was not pursued any further. So this area initially remained undeveloped.

The area received new impetus from the 1987 International Building Exhibition . Initially, the plan was to create a classic Berlin perimeter block development along Besselstrasse . For reasons of cost, however, the construction project was not pursued any further. Ultimately, it was decided to take part in a competition for parks in southern Friedrichstadt, which the architects Jasper Halfmann and Clod Zillich could win. The jury was won over by a flexible concept that did not set the park boundary and size statically, but kept it open for possible expansion of the adjoining flower wholesale market. A total of around 1.89 million euros (3.7 million DM ) were invested between 1986 and 1990  .

In 1995 the square was finally developed into a park. The construction of the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Stresemannstraße funds were for compensatory measures exist that the greening led the plant.
