Theodor Niethammer (born April 2, 1876 in Böblingen , † July 28, 1947 in Basel ) was a Swiss astronomer and geodesist and professor at the University of Basel .

Life

Niethammer studied astronomy in Basel from 1894 to 1904 and received his doctorate in 1904 . From 1899 to 1919 he worked as an engineer for the Swiss Geodetic Commission and specialized in geophysical gravity measurements and their influence on the geoid shape . From 1919 to 1946 Niethammer was professor of astronomy and head of the astronomical-meteorological institute at the University of Basel .

Niethammer has lasting importance primarily through his contributions to astrogeodesy , where he developed new methods for precise azimuth measurement and intensively dealt with minimizing instrumental errors. In gravimetry , Switzerland's first gravity network can be traced back to him.
