Theodor Ohlsen

Theodor Ohlsen (* 1855 in Klein-Brebel , † 1913 in Wiesbaden ) was a German landscape , marine and portrait painter .

Life

Theodor Ohlsen, son of a tailor, studied in Hamburg , Munich and Berlin , where he was a student of Gyula Benczúr , Ludwig von Löfftz , Karl Gussow and Franz von Defregger , among others . On October 20, 1880 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . He was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association .

From 1883 to 1893 he traveled to several continents; whereby Chile particularly fascinated him. He captured the country with its people and ways of life in many travel pictures that were also significant from a cultural and historical point of view. After his return to Hamburg, he exhibited two large-format naval paintings in the Hamburg Art Exhibition and in the Saxon Art Association in 1895 . He later worked in Wiesbaden, where he died in 1913.

Honors

The Ohlsen House, the village community center in Brebel, which was completed in 2001, is named after Theodor Ohlsen, among others.
