Theodor Schäffer

Theodor Schäffer (born January 7, 1839 in Darmstadt ; † June 25, 1914 there ) was a German civil engineer and university professor .

Life

Theodor Philipp Ludwig Schäffer was born in Darmstadt in 1839 as the son of the later director of the Darmstadt secondary school Friedrich August Schäffer and his wife Christina Schwarz. He attended the pedagogue (since 1879: Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium ). He then studied at the Building Academy in Hanover and at the universities in Berlin and Giessen. In 1862 he passed the state examination for construction in Giessen. This was followed by three years in Giessen. He then switched to industry and worked in Berlin and Stuttgart. From 1868 he was assistant to the Hessian Ludwig Railway . In July 1867 he was awarded the title of professor for engineering and building science by the Polytechnic University in Darmstadt. From 1869 to 1871 he was dean of the engineering school in Darmstadt.

In April 1872 he became a full professor of engineering at the Polytechnic in Darmstadt, the predecessor of the TH Darmstadt . From 1877 to 1879 he was the first rector of the new TH Darmstadt, which received this award from Grand Duke Ludwig IV (Hessen-Darmstadt) in 1877 .

Schäffer was a member of numerous commissions. In 1880 he retired and moved to the government of the Grand Duchy. From then on he was responsible for construction in the Ministry of Finance. At the beginning of August 1913, he was released from his position as director of the Technical Inspection Office.

Theodor Schäffer died in Darmstadt in June 1914 at the age of 75. His first marriage was to Emilie Reissig and, from 1912, his second marriage to Julie Reh.
